The D6 Samsu durian grows best in Malaysia’s tropical climate, thriving in warm, humid conditions with consistent rainfall and temperatures around 24–32°C. As a hardy, time-tested cultivar, it prefers deep, well-drained, fertile soils that are slightly acidic to neutral, alongside full sun exposure to support vibrant flowering and fruit development. Trees should be spaced about 10–12 meters apart to promote good airflow and lower disease risk. Regular irrigation during dry spells, paired with tailored fertilization, strategic pruning, and proactive pest management, enables D6 trees to yield high-quality, moderately sized fruits with their signature moist, thick pulp and rich, buttery sweetness.

The cultivation of D6 Samsu begins with selecting high-quality, disease-resistant rootstocks grafted with authentic D6 scions to preserve its 1936 heritage traits. During the vegetative stage, young trees require regular watering and balanced nitrogen-rich fertilization to establish strong root systems and sturdy branching. As the trees reach maturity, farmers shift to potassium-enhanced nutrient management to encourage uniform flowering and robust fruit set. Throughout the growing cycle, careful canopy management ensures proper sunlight penetration, while nets or branch ties are often utilized as the fruit matures. In true traditional fashion, D6 durians are harvested only when fully tree-ripened and naturally drop, guaranteeing the highest flesh quality, ideal moisture, and peak buttery sweetness.
